The Sofitel London St James is currently hosting a unique art exhibition in collaboration with one of France’s most successful contemporary artists, Richard Orlinski, which runs until Tuesday 10th November in the hotel’s elegant and airy lobby with its double height ceiling.
I was fortunate to be invited to the official launch of this impressive and very eye-catching selection of Richard Orlinski’s famous figurine works, where we were treated to Champagne and delicious canapés throughout the evening as guests took selfies of themselves next to King Kong! I also had the opportunity to meet with one of the consultants from UNIT LONDON Gallery who helped to make this exhibition possible and learn more about these art pieces.
This is in fact the first time that Orlinski has shown so many of his works in the UK and is a tremendous opportunity for art lovers, visitors and hotel guests alike to immerse themselves in this quite extraordinary display of artwork from this lauded French artist.
The inspiration for these works come from pop artists of Orlinski’s generation, with Robert Indiana being one of his biggest influencers and fall under his signature ‘Born Wild’ ethos. And whilst his works have been displayed at Art Basel, the Château de Versailles, FIAC and art galleries around the world, Orlinski says “I’m glad to share my artistic universe with Londoners and visitors to Sofitel London St James and looking forward to seeing my work in this magnificent space.”
As for the Sofitel London St James, well they are only too delighted to be able to demonstrate the ‘art de vivre’ that this luxury hotel group is well-known for and Nicolas Pesty, the hotel’s General Manager adds that “From the moment they step into the hotel, guests will be wowed by Richard’s stunning collection of artwork. Dramatic colour, symbolic shapes and powerful emotions will stimulate guests and visitors. The exhibition perfectly complements our mission to provide our guests with a combination of inspirational French art and culture.”
There are seven pieces in total on display, and include a bronze ‘Wild Tiger’, a ‘Wild Bear’, a ‘Wild Howling Wolf’, a second ‘Wild Bear’ in white and ‘Wild Horse’ in an almost electric blue, and a life-size ‘Wild King Kong’ and smaller ‘Wild King Kong’, all cast in resin.
If you fancy one of these unique pieces of art in your living room at home, well they don’t come cheap, with the ‘Wild Horse’ and ‘Wild Bear’ priced at £13,600. And if you really want that life-size King Kong standing at home – well it is rather spectacular – be prepared to write a cheque out for a mouth-watering £65,500 plus of course the cost of the rental van to get it home!
The Richard Orlinski Exhibition is on display at the Sofitel London St James until 10th November 2017 and is free to the public.
