A new lease of life has been given to the former Los Angeles Railway Building, a rather striking, 10-story Beaux Arts structure that was originally built in 1922 in Downtown Los Angeles, when the doors opened for the very first time last October of The Hoxton, Downtown LA hotel.

Located on the corner of 11th Street and Broadway, the building was once the L.A. Railway Authority, and later housed a garment manufacturer and candy shop, so to see it now restored into a beautiful 174 bedroom hotel, makes for a welcome addition to the local area.

The new hotel offers guests and locals lively and welcoming communal spaces as well as two separate drinking and dining destinations, Sibling Rival and Pilot up in the roof, both run in partnership with Sunday Hospitality and designed by Ennismore Design Studio in collaboration with Soho House. The hotel also has a rooftop pool offering great views of the LA skyline, best enjoyed in the evening as the sun goes down.

Ennismore Design Studio have also designed the hotel’s 174 bedrooms, which come in four categories, namely Snug, Cosy, Roomy and Biggy. The design of the rooms was heavily influenced by the Beaux Arts architecture of the building and its urban surroundings, as can be seen by the fresh colours and French principles found in the wall panelling, chevron flooring and burl timber. There is even a touch of Mexico in the rug patterns and handmade bathroom tiles. You’ll also find local artwork hanging on the walls as well as some fun retro telephones.

Each room has the now standard Hox perks you see in all Hoxton hotels, which includes fresh milk in the mini fridge, which I find is a nice touch and not something I have seen in many hotels I have stayed at, along with an assortment of local products available at reasonable supermarket prices and not the usual hotel prices, from the reception shop and one hour of free phone calls anywhere in the world. Another thoughtful and useful amenity.

Turning to The Hoxton, Downtown LA’s restaurants, Sibling Rival is an all-day modern diner located on the ground floor of the hotel and offers a fresh take on American classics and seasonal Californian produce. Some of the highlights include dishes such as Disco Tots, which are crispy potatoes, house hot sauce, lemon crème fraiche, bacon, green mole and radish. And the Ranch Fried Chicken is served with smashed garlic potatoes and chicken gravy.

You will find Pilot on the hotel’s rooftop, which is an open-air bar and restaurant that draws its inspiration from the Mediterranean coast and where diners can take in the wonderful views of the LA skyline. The menu is based around live-fire cooking and features fresh, locally sourced seafood and seasonal vegetables. There is a retractable roof creating a total al fresco experience and the restaurant also opens up to the hotel’s pool deck with additional lounge seating and a large bar should you simply want to enjoy a cocktail and take in the views.

The Hoxton, Downtown LA is the ninth hotel in the Hoxton hotel portfolio, which consists of The Hoxton, Williamsburg, The Hoxton, Portland, The Hoxton, Chicago, which opened last April, and The Hoxton, Southwark in London, which opened just last September.
