Jane Q, Los Angeles

Fame on the floor, stars in their eyes, and stores that should probably have an NC-17 rating, Hollywood has hustle that is hard to harness, often harder to hail, particularly for the local set. And yet, if you visit Southern California, you have to experience it, it’s basically law. This is why I like finding places to hunker down and enjoy a meal that doesn’t just make the mark, but marks Hollywood as a far more digestible destination.

A breath of fresh and taste of farm, at the corner of Yucca and Argyle, Jane Q welcome the Hollywood weary, the sidewalk denizen, or the local java drinker jonesing for a fix of LAMILL. The vegetable driven menu capitalizes on its farmers market proximity, the all-day pizzas and focaccias play up the customer on the go, and the tone at large, is fun and casual.

I suppose it is only fitting that in the heart of Hollywood, everyone comes to be a star. Here, it’s that glorious, electrically hued produce. It’s magnificent. Violet and canary cauliflower, petal pink grapefruit cocktails with a swirl of cucumber garnish, celadon heirlooms, edible flowers and bright off the vine basil.

There’s brunch. Social hour (3p-6p). Dinner. And the pre-fix theatre menu. Lots of options. We came to try dinner. We also came on Oscar Sunday. Nod to the Ever Bar upstairs, which as it turns, is quite the haute spot.

I had to appreciate that their Vodka cocktail has a green cold pressed kale juice base, because if not in Hollywood, where. Their Market Mimosa shares the same bragging rights with its cold press OJ, and the infused G&T’s treats its sippers to a fever tree frenzy featuring frozen grapes and an herbal hit of rosemary. On this night, the Aperol Spritz hit the spot, dotted with a few sips of my date’s Greyhound.

And between the smalls, the salads, and the sharables, the menu and the milieu collectively create a communal eating experience, at least between you and the ones you came to break bread with. The roasted cauliflower is so good with all that fresh mint and pine nuts, offsets the garlic so well. And the Dungeness crab dip, pretty decadent. And then there are the plates intended for sharing; the cheese plate, the charcuterie board, and an olive tapenade and fromage blanc plate, all with a Cal-Mediterranean quality that make meals feel like vacations.

Served piping out of the hearth, the brick oven pizzas, particularly that wild mushroom one, with the fontina and ricotta. Well above bar, friends. And we live amongst the pizza producing elite. Another shareable, whether listed as such or not.

Entrée offerings include a flat iron steak, herb roasted chicken, eggplant Parmigiana, and a pan seared salmon; something to please the pescatarian to the carnivore to the vegetarian. Whatever you are, save room for dessert.  Because that bread pudding is no joke.

  1. Look at those colors! Anything that bright has to be healthy, right? Sign me up for anywhere with cocktails I can pretend are as good for me as a cleanse!

  2. Those cocktails sound divine!!! And you had me at crab dip!!! And sounds like tons of vegetarian options which I love!

    • Hollywood parking is far from my favorite. Valet at the hotel is $9 for 3 hours with validation. Much as I enjoy circling the hood, this felt more than worth it.

  10. I haven’t tried it, but finding something in Hollywood that feels authentic, non-touristy, and high-quality is not always an easy feat. It’s on the “must try” list and I can’t wait to eat there next time we head to Pantages or elsewhere in the ‘hood.
