Going away for a weekend break and being short on time is a big reason why picking the right accommodation is a must.

It’s always a bit of a minefield trying to work out if not only the facilities are first class, but all the main attractions are near enough to visit.

Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the heart of the North East is a vibrant city, with plenty to see and do and over the years has seen it transformed into a must be visited hot spot.

The genuine warmth of the locals, together with its historic streets and cultural gems, plus the stunning Northumberland a short drive away, makes it a great place for a weekend break.

And one of the best places to stay is near to the busy Quayside, a lively stretch along the River Tyne and home to the landmark Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

Once a commercial dock, the area is now a nightlife hotspot with stylish bars, restaurants and clubs and on Sundays, Quayside Market sells local produce, crafts and street food. The opposite bank is dominated by the modern BALTIC art gallery and the steel curves of Sage Gateshead, a popular concert venue.

A five minute walk towards the city centre lies Staybridge Suites, a modern hotel with the extra bonus of fabulous staff who strive to make guests feel like members of the community, no matter how short the stay.

Greeted at the reception by smiling faces eager to help, brings an immediate relaxed feeling and check in is quick and stress free.

The area is by a comfy lounge space and The Hub, where guests are encouraged to bring in take-aways. It is also the spot for the all singing, all dancing breakfast which includes traditional hot and cold dishes, refreshments and for the sweet-toothed, a waffle making area.

At the back of the eating area lies The Den meeting room with a large television screen, attractively decorated with plants and social furniture. There’s also a 24 hour pantry to allow a last minute stock up of the essentials.

With 128 studio and one bedroom suites, all with fully equipped kitchens, the hotel has on-site parking for 85 cars and serves a wonderful buffet breakfast included in the stay.

Opening in September 2019, the hotel, part of the IHG Hotels and Resorts group, is the epitome of modern convenience.

The suites are stylish, spacious and fitted with all the mod cons needed. Decorated in calming dove grey colours, the small kitchen area is packed with up to date appliances, including a fridge, dishwasher, stove and all in one microwave oven.

With plenty of cutlery, dishes and an island to sit round and eat in, it’s an ideal space for a night in. There is also complimentary tea and coffee.

The main area hosts the huge comfy beds, a settee complete with foot rest and a large television. The sound proof windows and black out blinds, mean a good night’s sleep is guaranteed.

To encourage guests to mingle, there’s a fitness room and three times a week, a complimentary evening social reception is held. There are also laundry facilities and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Exploring the city can be done on foot and a quick stroll to the Quayside is just the ticket to saunter over the Gateshead Millennium Bridge which is lit up in different colours at night.

From there a visit to the many interesting and free exhibitions at the Baltic Centre and its four floors of contemporary art is a must.

The former flour mill was transformed in 2002 and as well as the collections, there is a shop, café and rooftop restaurant with cracking views of the iconic Tyne bridge and across the city.

Next door is The Sage or The Glasshouse International Centre for Music to give it its official title, which opened in 2004 and is home to a wide variety of musical concerts.

Back on the Newcastle side of The Quayside and a short stroll into the city centre and the historic Grey Street is a good call. Famed for its Georgian architecture, it is one of the most beautiful walk ways in Britain.

Bustling with energy, charming boutiques and independent shops, it leads into the main streets of the city crammed with high street names and eateries.

Well known for their generous nature, the Geordies are proud of their city and there’s a real buzz walking round and making memories before heading back for more togetherness at the Staybridge Suites.
