ROOST Baltimore

ROOST Baltimore is a luxury apartment hotel in the up-and-coming Peninsula neighbourhood of Maryland’s biggest city.

Under Armour’s global headquarters are a couple of minutes’ walk away, and this property is also handily placed for sailings from Maryland Cruise Terminal.

I stayed in apartment 311 and thought that ROOST was a tremendous place, largely because of its tasteful, contemporary décor and home-from-home vibe. The presence of a sizable rubber plant helped convey that.

The interlinked rooms included a kitchenette, living room, a bedroom and bathroom with a walk-in shower, a storage area and access to a balcony.

My bedroom was quiet, helping ensure that I slept well. Ample storage space was available to unpack. The king-size bed had reading lamps on either side and artwork adorned the wall. A television stood on a chest of drawers opposite the bed.

The living room offered a comfortable space to chill after exploring the city. It felt good to lounge on the sofa, sipping a cold root beer while watching a round-up of the day’s sport on TV. A digital radio was also available.

After being on the road for over a week, I particularly appreciated throwing my dirty clothing into the washing machine and then the in-room dryer and having fresh gear to wear.

The kitchen area proved ideal for a multi-day stay. With a large fridge, a microwave, a kettle plus a hob and oven, I appreciated having the option of buying in food and drink to prepare for breakfast and other meals.

There was a coffeemaker, which meant I could prepare a morning brew while showering. Sipping it on the balcony was an option. I like drinking coffee from a ceramic mug before having to face anyone; no matter how friendly they might be.

Indoors, a couple of seats stood by the island-style breakfast bar, which had a sink and dishwasher.

After spending time out and about, I welcomed returning to the spaciousness of my room to process all that I’d experienced in Baltimore. Yet had I wanted to spend time in them, Roost’s communal areas were also designed to be welcoming.

Downstairs I was positively impressed by the cosy, welcoming feel of the lobby. With a fireplace, sofas and tables. It’s an ideal spot to sit and sip a coffee and read or to use as a social space and interact with fellow guests.

Upstairs, Vessel is a lounge with a fireplace and a pool table.

Should you still have energy after pounding the pavement (or sidewalk as they say locally) while exploring Baltimore, there’s always the option of spending time in the fitness room. I expended mine in places including Fort McHenry, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum and the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum.

ROOST Baltimore with its spacious apartments was an ideal base for exploring all that Baltimore has to offer.

ROOST Baltimore is a 15-minute drive northeast of Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) and a 10-minute drive from the city’s downtown core. To reach the hotel from the I-95, take Exit 55 for Key Highway. Using public transport, the MTA Maryland bus service stops at Cromwell Street and Insulator Drive, less than five minutes’ walk from the apartment-hotel.

Insider Tip: If the weather is fine, head up to the roof and relax by the pool. The rooftop area features loungers and seating offering views of the surrounding area. Appreciate rye whiskey? Head across the street to visit the Sagamore Spirit Distillery shop and tour the facility. Dine overlooking the Patapsco River in Rye Street Tavern. Next door to Sagamore Spirit Distillery, the menu features seafood from the Chesapeake Bay, including Maryland’s signature dish, lump crab cake. The American Visionary Art Museum is a 10-minute drive from the hotel. It houses a thought-provoking and entertaining array of inspirational and quirky artworks.
