Two wheeled adventurer Malcolm Dunkeld spent eight months travelling off the beaten track in search of freedom and fun.
And judging by his new book – Motorbiking Mountain and Steppe, Forever Eastward – Dunkeld had the time of his life.
Across Europe to Azerbaijan, Afghanistan and onward to Siberia, Japan and Australia, Dunkeld, in his mid-60s, zipped along to achieve his dream.
The former university lecturer had jumped on his bike following his retirement and grabbing life with two hands, he was determined to enjoy some adventure.
And as the book reveals, he did in spades, with plenty of fun and interesting adventures along the way.
His book is, in essence a travel story about an eight-month, long and gruelling motorbike ride, but when you delve deep in, there is so much more to glean.
Told with humour, Dunkeld paints a picture with evocative and detailed descriptions of cities and landscapes, accounts of people in different economic and political systems, whose lives were often harrowing, and the unending challenge of riding the machine across diverse terrains in changing conditions.
The book has the added perspective of a spiritual journey as Dunkeld grapples with the reality of the world about him and his inner demons, bringing an open mind to bear on the people and places confronting him. It’s a journey into the writer’s own soul, as well as a cultural education.
Reading it, you realise the journey has been an uplifting experience for Dunkeld, as well as a wonderful look at the world and the exciting discoveries which were an unknown to him before.
As well as being of huge interest to bikers and motorbike enthusiasts, Motorbiking Mountain and Steppe, Forever Eastward will also appeal to anyone who enjoys an involving and entertaining story of worldwide travel, adventure and excitement.
