The Smart Traveller’s Wine Guide

It can be a minefield to pick the right wine if you are not an expert on the subject.

So, the newly published series of pocketbooks designed to help pick the right drink for the right occasion, could prove to be a real tonic to the non-connoisseur.

Jointly released by the Académie du Vin Library and Club Oenologique, the first two guides feature the Bordeaux and Rioja regions.

Author, Georgie Hindle, Decanter’s Bordeaux correspondent, lives in the region and knows every corner from petit châteaux to international superstars. Her counterpart, Fintan Kerr has a similar deep knowledge of Rioja and the wines of Northern Spain.

As well as the wine, the books have a guide section in the second half of the books which includes recommendations for restaurants, wine bars, winery hotels and wine shops, as well as details of wine routes and comprehensive lists of wineries that are open for tours and tastings.

So there really is no excuse not to know all the ins and outs of these very special wine regions. Readers will discover why American oak is so popular in Rioja, what exactly is a Super Second in Bordeaux, and why Pessac-Léognan is such a brilliant place to visit. The books describe the different terroirs of Rioja Alta and Alavesa, St-Julien and Margaux, in an uncomplicated and accessible style.

The Académie du Vin Library was founded by the late Steven Spurrier and friends and is dedicated to publishing the finest wine writing in the world.

Following the acquisition of the Classic Wine Library, the Académie du Vin is now the pre-eminent wine publisher in the English language.

Books are chosen with care, not only for their readability but also because the publishers genuinely believe they have something important to say about the world of fine wine that will enhance your drinking pleasure.

Club Oenologique is a premium lifestyle publication for curious and discerning wine and spirits lovers. Renowned for inspiring stories and trusted expertise, it connects people to the joys of the world, through the lens of wine, spirits and other interesting drinks.
