La Fiermontina Urban Resort, Lecce

La Fiermontina Urban Resort is a luxurious, elegant boutique hotel with 16 distinctive rooms and suites built around a 17th century private home filled with art and custom design furniture reminiscent of 1920’s Italy.

Opened in 2015, it was lovingly converted from a former masseria over ten years by Parisian Giacomo Fiermonte as a tribute to his glamorous grandmother Antonia Fiermonte and her two artist husbands.

La Fiermontina Public Area

Photographs, posters and mementos of the family’s history are dotted around the hotel which has a lovely garden with century old olive trees, imposing modern sculptures and, unusually for the city, an inviting outdoor swimming pool. La Fiermontina is decorated in simple, muted tones with stylish touches, elegant but comfortable furniture and an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional artworks from the owners’ own collection including some by Le Corbusier. It was remodelled by French interior design company Charles Philippe & Christophe with pietra de train stone floors and vaulted ceilings in the local style which provide a perfect backdrop to mustard chairs and the golden Puglia light which floods the property.

You find delights around every corner. The hotel has a pretty courtyard with tables and chairs surrounded by the olive trees ideal for enjoying a cappuccino or glass of local wine watched over by those oversized sculptures. Upstairs is a lounge with books piled on glass shelves perfect for relaxing after a day sightseeing the beautiful baroque churches and squares of Lecce.

La Fiermontina Courtyard

The hotel even has its own museum around the corner which tells the story behind the property.

There are 16 rooms including four suites. Each has high star pinnacle ceilings, huge beds with crisp white linen and modern furniture designed uniquely for the hotel. There are flat screen TVs, minibar and a Lavazza coffee machine in the room, fabulous designer toiletries and free Wi-Fi throughout. My bathroom had a giant freestanding central bath as well as shower and windows that looked out over the courtyard and garden.

Vaulted Ceiling Bedroom

La Fiermontina has its own chic restaurant serving modern Salentine cuisine. On sunny days you can dine al fresco under orange and lemon trees. Food is prepared using local produce. Breakfast always includes the local speciality pasticciotto, a delicious custard pastry, as well as fresh fruits, juices and eggs cooked to your specification.

The stylish bar is dedicated to Enzo Fiermonte, the enigmatic Antonia’s handsome brother, who became a famous boxer and later a Hollywood heartthrob actor. Sip a glass of wine or a cocktail here or step out into the romantic garden for an aperitif.
