A Simple Pre-Trip Car Checklist for Stress-Free Travel

BMW 2 Series

If ever you’re heading off for a trip in your car, whether it’s a journey overseas or one that’ll take you at least a few hours, then a pre-trip car check is essential.

Not only will it help ensure your car’s in good condition, but it can also ensure a stress-free journey. There are numerous checks worth doing, from checking tyres to topping up fluids and stocking up on emergency supplies.

With that in mind, here is a helpful pre-trip car checklist for stress-free travel this year for you and your household.

Tyres

When it comes to your tyres, it’s good to check tread depth and pressure, including the spare that you have if it’s currently in your car.

You should be doing visual checks of your tyres every time you leave, even for short journeys like your morning commute. Check for cracks, bulges and uneven wear. These are essential checks that will ensure you’re not driving on compromised wheels.

If you do notice any problems with the tyres, it’s good to get them checked and replaced, especially if you have tyres that have been on the car for a long time.

Fluids

Fluids are an important one to be aware of when it comes to your car’s performance. Just like we need water to stay hydrated as humans, the same goes for a car’s need for fluids.

You should check all fluid levels, like your oil level and top up on screenwash and engine coolant too. Engine coolant is essential because it prevents your engine from overheating. Screenwash is also crucial to help keep your windscreen clean.

Battery and electrics

This one is a little more challenging to do yourself, especially when it involves checking under the hood or bonnet. It might be something you take to your local car service provider before going on a long trip.

If you’re able to and know where to look, then check for corrosion on the battery terminals. You can also easily check your air conditioning to make sure no warning lights are on the dashboard. If they are on, then it needs to be checked out urgently and without delay.

Lights

Lights are another essential when driving, especially during the night when visibility might be compromised.

You should therefore test your headlights, taillights, brake lights, indicators and fog lights all before leaving. If any lights aren’t working, then you’ll want to get these fixed as soon as possible.

Wipers and visibility

When checking your car, you’ll also want to check your wiper blades for any tears, as this can compromise their performance while out on the road.

Ensure your windows are clean and that as mentioned above, there’s enough screenwash topped up for the length of the journey.

Emergency kit

An emergency kit will come in handy if you’re ever stuck on the road and awaiting emergency services to come rescue you. That being said, carry a spare tyre, warning triangle, first aid kit and if possible, some jumper cables.

With this pre-trip car checklist, you’ll hopefully complete your journey with little to no problems.
