Kayaking the Sea Roads

Kayaking

Former crofter Ed Ley-Wilson is no stranger to the harsh environment of the waters in the Scottish Highlands.

He loves nothing more than testing himself as he kayaks alone in the sea. The adrenaline enthusiast has now penned ‘Kayaking the Sea Roads’, which is a personal journey by boat into the heart of the sea roads which make up the highlands and islands.

Beautifully written and blending the intensity of the journey with a careful observation of the natural world and a first-hand knowledge of the challenges of living and working in a world where mother nature is number one.

Natural rhythms awaken a deep sense of wonder and can give cause to become a part of the environmental recovery so sorely needed. Produced by Whittles Publishing, the book contains 60 colour photographs, nine maps and eight chapter drawings. It will appeal to kayakers and anyone with an interest in this magical part of Scotland or the natural environment.

The softback is priced at £16.99 and sees Ed leading the reader as he travels low in the water, with the restless sea ever present and he camps on remote rough shores, encountering not only the myriad animals and birds which share his every day, but also the people, their communities and the often gnarly rural issues impacting on humans and animals alike.

An experienced expedition leader, Ed shares his knowledge of environmental and land management issues pertinent to the Highland coast.

A great example is Ed’s exploration of the impact of native versus non-native species, community land ownership, tourism, hunting and the varied other uses of coastal lands and seas, allowing the reader to open their eyes to the Scottish Highlands and realise that it is not just a pretty view.

What starts as a great adventure, becomes a tale of a deep sense of place and it is a journey home, back to where Ed’s Highland love affair began.
