The Fifth Step

The Fifth Step Production

Handling a subject like addiction well bears a heavy responsibility. But David Ireland’s wonderful The Fifth Step does just that and with a dash of humour thrown in to.

The two man 90-minute play from The National Theatre of Scotland certainly sets you thinking as you unravel lots of complications.

Young alcoholic Luka (Jack Lowden of Slow Horses fame) is unsure about joining the 12 step programme and seeks the guidance of older former addict James (Sean Gilder, best known for Shameless) through Alcoholics Anonymous.

The play concentrates on the fifth step towards recovery which means sharing all the things which spark off guilt and shame and the need for a drink.

An uncertain Luka looks to James for wisdom and help, but as the play unravels, it’s clear that James is lost too.

Set in the wonderful Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow, the revolving set by Milla Clarke is clever and moves the two actors swiftly from their chats in the café, gym and hospital.

The Fifth Step actors

Director Finn den Hertog ensures a well-disciplined performance which covers everything from violence to sexuality and the actors’ gel well and give an intense and powerful display.

Ireland, known for his black humour, is more complex in this play and delves deeply to find why the men needed to seek alcohol to numb out the pain of what is happening in their heads and hearts.

There are lots of twists and turns and some great laugh out loud moments to brighten the gloom and as the play moves on, religion becomes involved and James becomes angrier and more lost, with the role of mentor switching as Luka tries to understand James as well as his own needs.

It’s puzzling, but thought-provoking, clever and catchy and a very impressive piece of theatre.

The Fifth Step runs at The Pavilion until Saturday 31st August 2024 with tickets available from: www.trafalgartickets.com.
