Darnley’s Gin Sustainable Pouches

Darnley’s Gin have announced the launch of its recyclable gin pouches just in time for Mother’s Day. With a choice of three delicious flavours, these sustainable, refillable gin pouches are available in 70cl sized pouches for Darnley’s Gin Original, Spiced Gin and Navy Strength Gin.

For those of you unfamiliar with Darnley’s Gin, the company was founded just over 10 years ago in 2010 by the Wemyss Family. The Distillery and Visitor Centre opened in July 2017 following the renovation of a cottage behind sister Single Malt Whisky Distillery, Kingsbarns Distillery, in the East Neuk of Fife.

Distilled in the London Dry style, Darnley’s use only natural botanicals which are either grown in their own gin garden, sourced from trusted partners or foraged locally in the East Neuk of Fife. They do not add any artificial colourings or flavours.

Sustainability is important to the company, and so the new pouches form part of Darnley’s Gin 2022 sustainability strategy, with the goal of spreading environmental awareness and sustainable practices throughout the brand. First and foremost, the new range is aimed at existing customers, who can order their re-fill pouch and then decant the gin into their existing Darnley’s bottles before simply returning the used pouch by Freepost back to Darnley’s HQ for recycling.

The pouches are made from a plastic material (grade 7) which is not only recycled but also weighs 50% less than a glass bottle of Darnley’s Gin, making them lighter and therefore cheaper to transport.

The production process for all glass bottles is highly energy-intensive, making the pouches a far more sustainable and attractive long term choice for customers. So, purchasing a glass bottle first and then refilling it with the gin of your choice from the pouches makes a lot of sense. I have the say, the pouches are sturdy and because they are smaller than a bottle, much easier to store as well.

William Wemyss, Founder of Darnley’s Gin, commented:

“Our sustainability plans for the brand are one of constant improvement and the launch of our gin pouches is part of this journey. We hope Darnley’s Gin fans will not only enjoy these gins on Mother’s Day, but also return the pouches so the full environmental benefits of this initiative can be realised”.
