Gilded Hotel, Newport

A ‘Clever Twist on the Gilded Age’, the Gilded is a unique place to stay in Newport.

Fun, quirky, bright, are just some of the adjectives to describe the Gilded.  Housed in two refurbished Victorian homes in a neighbourhood in the centre of historic Newport, Rhode Island, the Gilded is trés chic with a classy ambience.

At the entrance, guests are greeted by two large granite lion statues gracing either side of a stone staircase leading up to the original wooden porch.  On entering the 17-room property, one’s attention goes immediately to the modern, colourful décor juxtaposed playfully with the Victorian architectural features.  Turquoises, vibrant purples and fanciful prints are used on furnishings and soft furnishings equally.

Gilded Hotel Suite

There is a light filled sitting room immediately to the left which offers a place to relax and read.  Continue through the foyer and, on the right, is the staircase leading up to the second floor and the hotel’s deluxe rooms and suites.

Walk through to the lobby to find baked goods on the desk as well as a coffee and tea station.  On check in, guests are given a tablet with information about the hotel and local attractions. Unfortunately, no assistance is offered to take bags upstairs and, as there is no elevator, this is a ‘fail’ in my view.

The hotel lounge

Beyond the check-in/reception area wander through the walkway (where tables are set up in the morning for breakfast) and down the stairs to a lovely outdoor seating area situated between the two parts of the hotel.  Ideal when the weather is sunny.

The check in desk/counter top is again in use for breakfast.  Tiny portions of food are set out and guests help themselves.

Billiard Table

Our Queen Deluxe room had ample space and interestingly decorated walls.  The enormous headboard is distinctive, and bed and bedding are exceptionally comfortable. I don’t particularly like having clothes and robes hanging on a suspended rail rather than in a cupboard, but I imagine it takes up less space.  The bathroom is quite large and has attractive bronze fixtures and Lather toiletries.  Wi-Fi is also included in the price.

Carry on to the next section of the hotel and you will find a large play room with a billiard table.  Note that there are no swimming pool or spa facilities at this hotel.

Terrace

If you are interested in touring the town’s breweries whilst you are there, check out the Rhode Island Brew Bus which picks up at different locations.
