Edinburgh’s Axe Innovators: Black Axe Throwing Co

Black Axe Throwing Co Bar

Valentine’s Day 2018. Black Axe Throwing Co burst onto the Edinburgh scene with the city’s first-ever axe-throwing pop-up. March 2023. The company is stronger than ever. Black Axe Throwing Co now have their very own venue located in Edinburgh.

Descending down the wooden stairs to the warehouse-like venue, the place is huge, yet welcoming and warm. To the left is a sign reading “Nice Axe”. To the right are runways with bullseyes located at the end.

Straight ahead is the UK’s largest designated alcohol-free bar.

With the help of breweries from around the UK and beyond, the Black Axe crew have assembled a record-breaking collection of AF beers and spirits.

The range includes beers from Scotland’s only woman-owned non-alcoholic brewing company Jump Ship Brewing, as well as Edinburgh’s non-alcoholic spirit Talonmore, a spirit inspired by the versatility of the city’s historic charm, natural surroundings and unique festival spirit.

As the session begins, a warm welcome speech commences with clear instructions on how to throw the axes. Much like golf, the throwing of the axe is all in the technique, rather than power. Some people have clearly been before, throwing under-arm and all sorts of skills I could only hope to master. It looks like Black Axe Edinburgh have built up a loyal following of local axe wielders.

Black Axe Throwing

Obviously axes and alcohol is a no-no, but what’s really striking is the creativity in which Black Axe have conquered this barrier: the UK’s largest alcohol-free bar is something to attract drinkers and non-drinkers alike. I urge everyone to try it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised that a beer doesn’t actually have to include alcohol.

There are many axe-throwing experiences across the UK, however, Black Axe offers something different. A certain charm, a real experience, a welcoming feeling that will make you want to tell everyone you know what you have just done.

They must be doing something right as they now have venues across the UK in Edinburgh, Belfast, Lancaster and Margate.

Black Axe is an urban axe-throwing experience that offers the perfect stress-busting activity for a group of friends, team-building camaraderie amongst work colleagues or the ideal alternative date night.

As Spring approaches, the Edinburgh venue is getting busy, so to find our more, please visit: www.blackaxethrowing.com, send an email to edinburgh@blackaxethrowing.com or DM them on @blackaxethrowingcoedinburgh to secure your spot!
