Mamma Mia!

There’s always a feel good factor when it comes to the iconic 1970’s Abba band.

And judging by the happy screaming and jumping about at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow, the smash hit musical tour is a real winner.

With great acting, a colourful set and costumes and of course some cracking Abba favourite tunes, the show is definitely one not to miss.

Transported onto a bright and sunny Greek island, the story centres around Sophie Sheridan (Hazel Baldwin) preparing to marry her teenage sweetheart Sky (Samuel George Downey) under the watchful eye of her protective mum, Donna (Jenn Griffin).

The only problem is, Sophie doesn’t know who her dad is and after reading her mum’s diary, it could be any one out of three, so she invites Bill (Simon Victor), Harry (Richard Vorster) and Sam (Richard Taylor Woods) to the island, while she works it all out.

This causes much emotion and hilarity, especially when the trio mix with Donna’s old friends, Tanya (Sarah Earnshaw) and Rosie (Lauren Woolf), who are up for a rerun of the fun they had as youngsters.

The result is a musical full of mischief, passion and cracking songs, including the popular “Dancing Queen”, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”, “I Have a Dream” and “Money, Money, Money” under the flamboyant direction of band master Carlton Edwards.

It’s a lovely show in its 26th year, watched by over 11 million people and it’s testament to the brilliant actors that it still seems as fresh as it did on its debut.

Everyone plays their part, from Sophie’s best friends Ali (Rachel Seirian) and Lisa (Lex Richardson) to Sky’s hilarious pals, Pepper (Ashton Sharp) and Eddie (Albert Green) and the ensemble, Brook Blackford-Jenkins, Rubi-Mai Bown, James Brice, Aled Davies, Ryan Ebbrell, Georgia Gillam, Marisa Harris, Jay Jobarteh, Ashleigh Jones, Bethany Lythgoe, Sullivan Martin, Sarah McFarlane, Rachel Oates, Megan Speirs, Adam Stickler, Luke Stone and Maisy Wignall.

The brilliant band features Ashley Jacobs and Eion Corcoran on keyboards, Steve Hynes (drums), Harry Weeks, William Arbuthnot and Pete Hunt on guitar.

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd with excellent choreography from Anthony Van Laast, the show is fun, full of energy and a real tonic.
