Paris is perhaps the most famous city in the world, rivalling the likes of London and New York. But given the negative press about France in general, is it still somewhere worth visiting, and are people who rave about it exaggerating?

Timeless beauty everywhere
Most modern cities look like ramshackle messes as architects try to marry modern construction techniques and pylons with industrial or traditional buildings. However, that’s not true in Paris. This location is quite different from any other global city, simply because it doesn’t matter where you stand or take your photos, everything looks great.
The French are much more protective of their boulevards and beauty spots than, say the Brits or Americans. For them, the entire purpose of a city is to make the observer feel good, and that’s precisely what they manage to achieve. There are some rough spots, of course, but these tend to be far out of town where you wouldn’t usually go.
The romance is real
People aren’t exaggerating about the romance of Paris either. There’s a reason it is known as “The City of Love”. This is because everywhere you go with a special other person feels idyllic. Paris is set up in a way that crams a lot of beauty into a small space, so even walking down a random side street becomes an aesthetic experience that ties into love and romance beautifully.
The history is everywhere
Then, there’s the fact that there’s history everywhere. Like London, Paris goes back thousands of years as a regional and national hub, giving it a gravitas that you can only find in world cities.
For example, if you go to Versailles, you can see the grandeur of the monarchic palaces that reside there (famous for being the location where Marie Antoinette said “Let them eat cake” before the French Revolution). Then there’s the Bastille where the revolution actually started as well as art galleries, museums and historical buildings with stories to tell.
The city is well connected
At the same time though, Paris isn’t stuck in the renaissance. The French have invested substantially in its infrastructure, making it easy to get to and travel across the city.
