Touching tradition at its simple best was the welcome at the Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa, a very special and different style beachside hotel in magical Mauritius.
In the background, the UNSECO recognised Le Morne Mountain was dramatically dark as the sunset ritual to mark the end of the day, led by flame lit torches along the beach to music, took place as part of a torch saga ceremony.
Impressively the procession by staff to mark the sun dipping into the Indian Ocean, has been part of the hotel routine for more than 25 years in a bid to bring “a moment of light, a moment of soul.”
It’s a stand out wow at a hotel which is all about creating experiences to remember the naturally stunning west coast playground.
And as is expected from a Hilton owned hotel, everything from the big-hearted staff to the immaculately decorated and kept bedrooms are spot on.
Set within luscious landscape, the pastel colours of the hotel provide a cool and elegant welcome and a relaxed check in, complete with a lemon grass inspired drink to quench the thirst.
Mauritius is known for its colourful flowers and greenery, and the Hilton has inspired grounds where the bedrooms have an enviable view of the unspoilt beach.
The rooms are big and simply but beautifully decorated, with a tropical charm mixing natural materials, smooth clean lines and unique paintings by multi-disciplinary artist Kim Yip Tong, adding to the luxurious feeling of the accommodation which is first class and has all the mod cons of a top class hotel.
With spacious bathrooms stocked with a walk in power shower, Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries, the fluffiest of towels and bathrobes and a balcony perfectly positioned for people watching, it’s paradise.
All are just a hop and a skip to the hotel’s pools with a separate infinity one for adults only and a shallow dip for children to enjoy freely without grown up grumbles and both are warmed up in the winter months with an outside Jacuzzi to complete the experience.
The thatched beach umbrellas and comfy loungers are just the ticket for a relaxing time and free watersports are on offer at the lagoon, from stand up paddle boards to snorkelling and kayaks.
Dry land is home to an excellent tennis court and nightly entertainment is centred on UNSECO recognised Mauritian sega dancing which features national folk music and is a powerful expression of survival, joy and resilience rooted in the country’s history.
Food and drink are high on the hotel’s priorities and guests are spoiled for choice with four luxury restaurants, from the all-day dining experience in the Pomme d’Amour, which offers sumptuous breakfasts in a natural environment and full of sustainable options, to an international buffet at night with differing cuisines served up at live cooking stations.
Signature restaurant, the Ginger Thai is the place for traditional dishes featuring deep exotic flavours in a vibrant setting, while casual European cuisine is served up at Coquillages, a relaxed beachside venue, and Kesari focuses on classic authentic North and South Indian recipes.
The Sunset Bar is where colourful cocktails can be enjoyed as the day departs and poolside drinks are shaken up at the Hibiscus.
Asian and Indian therapeutic traditions are kept alive in the oriental aesthetic spa complete with natural Mauritian volcanic stone and water features, where the best massages are dished up to keep the relaxing vibe going. And there is gym for the grown-ups and a dedicated kids club for the little ones.
The nearby village of Flic-en-Flac boasts one of the longest beaches on the island and close by is Le Morne Brabant, famous for its optical illusion of an “underwater waterfall” which is best seen from the sky.
A half hour drive ends at Vallé Adventure Park, once a family owned land, filled with geological marvels and today, a fun place for all the family in a spectacular setting.
From walking trails through vibrant landscapes to thrill seeking buggy rides to see the 23 different coloured natural stones, waterfalls, zip lines, racing cars and the biggest and friendliest Aldabra tortoises who moved pretty fast despite being 100 years old! There’s a kid’s park too and happy deer who love to join you for lunch in the park’s café.
Other great trips nearby, which can be arranged by the hotel, include visits to the Casela Nature Park for safari drives, zip lining, walks with lions, quad driving, hiking through the lush forest of the Black River Gorges and taking scuba diving, helicopter and catamaran trips.
All in all, this naturally beautiful area of Mauritius is true to the traditional beauty which the Hilton strives to keep alive!
