Tips on Making a Road Trip More Enjoyable

Road trip holiday

Road trips are great fun. They give you the chance to see multiple towns or cities (or countries if you’re going abroad on your trip). There’s something special about hitting the open road. Whether you’re planning a weekend escape to the countryside, a coastal adventure or a cross-country journey, road trips offer the freedom to travel at your own pace and discover places you’d never experience by flying.

But with that being said, the best road trips are the ones that have had the most preparation put into them. Just like a lot of things in life, the sooner you start planning and putting things in place, the smoother the whole experience will be. By deciding the route in advance you can avoid traffic, by selling your caravan (if it’s old) and getting an upgraded one, it makes it more exciting and booking things in advance can save you money – meaning you can spend more on your trip.

Below we have put together our guide on things you can do to make your road trip more enjoyable. Keep on reading to discover four different tips that you may want to think about when you are next on a road trip.

Make sure your vehicle is ready

This tip isn’t the most fun, but it will make your whole trip a lot more enjoyable. Whether you are driving a caravan or a car for your road trip, there are various things you can do before you leave to get your vehicle ready. Things like checking your oil, ensuring you have enough water in the windscreen wiper reservoir, checking your tyre pressures and that your brakes are effective are all important things that you should do. If your vehicle is due a service, it’s worth having it checked beforehand for complete peace of mind. The last thing you want is your road trip ruined due to something going wrong with your vehicle.

Book activities in advance

While leaving room for spontaneous adventures is part of the charm of a road trip, it’s worth booking your must-do activities before you set off. Popular attractions, guided tours and experiences can sell out quickly, especially during weekends and school holidays. Booking ahead not only guarantees your place but can also save you money, with many attractions offering discounted online prices. When booking activities, always read the reviews as this gives you a good indication on what other holiday makers think of the place – sites like TrustPilot or Trip Advisor are good for that.

Take regular breaks

It can be tempting to power through long stretches of driving, especially when you’re eager to reach your destination, but regular breaks are essential for both safety and enjoyment. Spending hours behind the wheel can lead to fatigue which will cause you to have reduced concentration which could lead to an accident due to you being tired.

Aim to stop at least every two hours to stretch your legs. Try to stop at a service station so you can use the facilities and grab a drink or something to eat. If your route passes through scenic towns, viewpoints or local attractions, use these as opportunities to break up the drive and experience somewhere new. Even a short 15 minute break can help you recharge, improve your focus and ensure you’re ready to enjoy the next stage of your road trip.

Plan your route before you leave

Although sat navs make navigation easier than ever, it’s still worth planning your route before you head off. Before any trip we would recommend you quickly check the route on Google so that you can see the live traffic. Checking for roadworks, major traffic hotspots and possible diversions can save you both time and frustration.

It’s also a good idea to identify petrol stations, charging points if you’re driving an electric vehicle, and places to stop for lunch along the way (service stations are often a good choice). And they make your journey a little smoother.

We hope our guide has given you some useful things to think about with regards to making your road trip a little more fun. As we mentioned, the sooner you start planning the less stressful things are and the more enjoyable your holiday will be.
