Timex has announced the launch of a limited-edition Waterbury watch for just $1 (£1 here in the UK), to celebrate their 170th anniversary, while at the same time reviving a legacy of accessible timekeeping dating back to 1854 when the company started as the Waterbury Clock Company.
This new limited-edition timepiece commemorates the iconic Yankee pocket watch, which was the brand’s first timepiece sold at $1 and famously known as “the watch that made the dollar famous.”
Who would have thought that 170 years ago timekeeping was a luxury reserved just for the elite. That was because pocket watches were extremely expensive and well out of reach for the average person. But the Waterbury Clock Company changed everything, making timekeeping available for all, and it soon became an essential tool for everyday Americans. From farmers checking the time during harvests and train conductors relying on it for punctuality, to factory workers taking their breaks by its hands.
This meant that by the turn of the century, over six million of these Waterbury “dollar watches” were now in the hands of everyday Americans.
Timex has stayed true to its roots with this special anniversary edition, which is beautifully crafted with a 170th Anniversary logo on a sleek, ice-white dial. The 19mm Roman numeral markers are finely lacquered in 3D, while the caseback is engraved to commemorate the 170th anniversary.
Shari Fabiani, Chief Marketing Officer of Timex Group, commented on the significance of this special timepiece:
“Our 170th anniversary isn’t merely a celebration of our storied past; it’s a heartfelt reaffirmation of our unwavering commitment to making quality timepieces accessible to everyone. The $1 Anniversary Watch pays homage to the original Waterbury campaign, which promised ‘correct time for little money.’ In crafting this watch, we wanted to honour the loyal consumers who have trusted and cherished our brand over the years.”
Only 1,000 of these limited-edition Waterbury watches will be made available worldwide on the 16th November 2024 at Timex.co.uk and instore at Frasers in Meadowhall, priced at just £1.

We’re really sorry you had problems trying to purchase the watch. We also tried to purchase one but were unable to. I guess they sold out very fast!
