Lokal’s connection to Türkiye reaches far beyond the food on the plate. Rather than simply highlighting a few familiar flavours, the restaurant incorporates local ingredients, family memories and cooking techniques passed down through generations. It provides an experience with a sense of identity that feels personal and genuine rather than themed.
That connection also shapes the way the menu is designed to be enjoyed. From the mezze arriving in a steady stream to warm bread and dips passed around the table, this is food designed to be shared, talked about and inevitably, over-ordered. Restaurants in this part of London can sometimes take themselves a little too seriously, but Lokal feels polished without feeling stuffy. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, helped by a team who are happy to guide you through the menu. Red runs throughout the furnishings, décor and even the aprons and chefs’ hats. References to Türkiye are woven into the space without feeling overwhelming. The overall effect is warm, relaxed and sociable.
Lokal’s signature cocktail list offers the first real taste of its regional approach, taking inspiration from Türkiye’s seven geographical regions. Each drink has its own ingredients, spirit and character, reflecting the area from which it takes its name. I loved that the Turkish influence was carried through to the drinks rather than being confined to the kitchen, ensuring the cocktail felt part of the experience, rather than simply something to sip while perusing the menu.
The menu itself is divided into spreads, mezze, dishes to enjoy while you wait and larger plates from the mangal. We began with four smaller dishes which, in hindsight, was probably a little ambitious for two people planning to also order mains and puddings. However, it is very easy to get carried away here.
First came the atom spread with warm homemade bread. Featuring roasted peppers and wild garlic, it was creamy without being bland, with enough flavour to make it feel far more interesting than the standard dip you might order in a lot of restaurants. Hummus is available for anyone who prefers to keep things familiar, but the atom is well worth venturing slightly outside your comfort zone for.

We also tried the artichoke, grilled prawns and Lokal aubergine. The latter, combining smoked aubergine with roasted kapia pepper, was a highlight: rich, smoky and full of flavour, yet still allowing the ingredients themselves to come through. This simplicity is important to Head Chef Akacan Agir, whose ideas often begin with a flavour or a memory of growing up in Türkiye. Childhood dishes and memories of family gatherings influence the menu, but they are translated in a way that works in a contemporary London restaurant without losing their identity.
That distinction matters. Rather than offering a fusion-led or overly modernised interpretation of Turkish food, Lokal focuses on recognisable, traditional flavours. Its spicy ezme is perhaps one of the most personal examples. Originating from Adana, where Akacan grew up, it was always present at family mangal gatherings and shared around the table. Including it on the menu is a way of bringing some of those memories and traditions into Lokal.
I struggled to choose between the various mangal dishes on offer, but our waiter recommended the beef şaşlık without a moment’s hesitation. I was pleased to have trusted his guidance. The buttermilk-marinated beef arrived in delicately carved slices, accompanied by a light onion and leaf salad. We added rice and a salad of baked fennel, beetroot, rocket and quince vinaigrette, which brought freshness and a welcome sharpness alongside the richness of the meat.
The lamb loin, another ingredient the kitchen is especially passionate about, is treated just as simply: its fat seared over charcoal, the meat cooked medium pink, seasoned with salt and rested. It is a perfect illustration of Lokal’s approach. When the produce is high quality and the cooking is confident, there is no need to overcomplicate the dish.
Unfortunately, we had very little room left for dessert, although we still found space for gelato and sorbet. They provided a simple but welcome palate cleanser after we had worked our way through a plentiful and varied selection of dishes. Those with a little more stamina can opt for traditional Turkish puddings including baklava and kadayıf.

If I returned, and I would, I might approach the menu slightly differently. Whilst the beef şaşlık was incredibly tasty, if, like me, you love trying lots of different flavours, I would be tempted to order a wider selection from the spreads, mezze and ‘while you wait’ sections to make the most of the menu’s sharing style.
It was clear how carefully every part of Lokal had been considered and connected to Türkiye. The regional cocktail menu, the red accents throughout the restaurant, the stories behind the dishes and the emphasis on gathering around a table all lead back to Türkiye. Lokal doesn’t rely on complicated presentation or reinvention for its own sake. Instead, it respects its origins, buys ingredients worth tasting and uses careful cooking to bring out their flavour. The result is Turkish cooking that feels genuine and considered, served in a setting where sharing is not simply encouraged but central to the experience.
