If you regularly take your car on long car journeys it could be worth upgrading your vehicle with a few modifications. Such improvements can allow you to get more practical use out of your vehicle from bringing more items to keeping devices charged. Below are just a few top mods every road tripper should consider.
Dash cams
Dash cams are a great way to preserve precious memories of your road trips including capturing some of the amazing scenery and recording unexpected moments that your passengers may not have their phone ready for. They’re also useful if you ever get in an accident and need to prove to an insurer or court that you weren’t in the wrong (hopefully, none of your future journeys will involve accidents, but just in case it’s useful to have video evidence). Cameras are typically fitted facing forwards, but you can also fit them facing behind you. Take your time to research different models and compare specs like video quality, field of view and low light performance.
Touring tyres
Upgrading your tyres can make a big difference on a road trip. Touring tyres are designed specifically for long journeys. They have deep, durable treads that last longer while also gripping better in various road conditions and weathers. They’re also designed to improve comfort and reduce road noise, resulting in more pleasant journeys. Some will even help you consume less fuel by offering reduced rolling resistance. You’ll pay more for touring tyres than you would regular tyres but they pay off in the long run.
Roof rack
One of the most popular 4×4 accessories is a roof rack. These accessories allow you to transport bulky or oversized items like surfboards and bicycles, as well as fitting roof boxes or carrying luggage. Different styles of roof racks suit different purposes, so do your research before you get one fitted. Be wary that roof racks will add height and weight and can affect handling (although it really depends on what you use them to carry).
Trailer hitch
Fitting a trailer hitch could allow you to tow trailers, caravans or even boats. Like roof racks, they’re excellent for expanding a vehicle’s utility allowing you to bring specialist gear and recreational equipment that might otherwise be too large or awkwardly shaped. Trailer hitches are best suited to SUVs and 4x4s that are built to have the towing capacity. Bear in mind though that towing items will affect weight and handling, so you’ll need to slow down your speed and more than likely consume a lot more fuel.
Power inverter
Most modern cars have USB ports for charging devices, however you can improve your vehicle’s charging abilities by installing a power inverter. You’ll get access to more battery power for charging up laptops, cameras, portable fridges or even coffee makers. You can buy attachments that fit into your existing cigarette lighter port, or you can wire a larger unit directly into your battery. Make sure that your alternator can handle the extra load and mount the inverter in a well-ventilated area.
