For most people cars are an essential purchase for the freedom to move about but they’re also a big responsibility. There’s the safety responsibility for one. If you’re driving your family around, taking care on the roads is critical and you’ve also got to be diligent to respect the safety of other drivers too.
Then there’s the matter of ensuring each element of your car is fully functioning. A car will only last as long as it’s properly cared for, so you’ll need to do your utmost to protect it. Most people have basic maintenance down, such as cleaning and regular servicing but there are other important aspects that are often forgotten about. To help get you up to speed here are three areas most people don’t consider but should.
-
Battery health
The battery and how it functions is one area of the vehicle most people are well accustomed to as everyone’s had to replace their own battery at least once. That said, there’s more to this component than meets the eye.
The reality is that most people have only ever taken notice of the battery when there’s a problem but it’s important to be aware of the health of the unit throughout its lifespan. Check for corrosion and rust on the terminals as a bad connection can reduce its capacity. Your battery should also be cleaned and checked for charge relatively frequently.
-
Vehicle electrics
While you might think of a car as mostly mechanical, modern vehicles rely heavily on electronics. Onboard computers control many elements of your car, so it’s essential to give the electrics the attention they need. If part of the computer systems fails while you’re driving, you could end up stuck in the middle of nowhere.
Unfortunately, it’s common for a blinking warning light to perplex a mechanic and poor advice is then given that if the car is still running, it should be fine. If you’ve got an electrical problem no one can seem to figure out it’s vital to contact an auto electrician as they’re experts in the field and go far beyond the normal checks with their diagnostic equipment and expertise.
-
Suspension
It almost goes without saying that the suspension is one of the most important parts of your vehicle but most people don’t ever think about it as it’s very much an out-of-sight, out of mind sort of thing.
Because it absorbs every bump in the road, your car’s suspension plays an essential role in both the vehicle’s performance and longevity. Given that you can’t see a lot under there, pay close attention to how things sound and feel and take note of any rattling, faulty handling and an overall more difficult driving experience and get it checked as soon as possible to ensure no permanent damage sets in.
Wrapping up
This article by no means covers every oft-disregarded detail of car maintenance but it’s a start. Hopefully the tips above may help you pay closer attention to how things are functioning.
