Best-selling author Ruth Kelly has tapped into our obsession with reality television to come up with a gripping read set to hit the bookshelves this summer.
The Villa, published by Pan Macmillan Books tantalises the reader with its cover drawing you in with the promise of seven days, ten contestants and a prize to die for.
Death and mayhem erupt on an exclusive Balearic Island as it plays host to a special television show, with the usual young, glossy haired, bronzed bodies, aiming to hit the jackpot. Or are they?
With a glamorous setting full of sun and sand, the contestants think they are in for fun, all the way, but as the plot thickens, the story twists and takes the reader on a roller coaster of emotions.
Ten contestants arrive at a luxurious villa on a stunning private island ready for every moment of their lives to be streamed to a global audience, who have unprecedented control over those competing for the cash prize.
Unbeknown to nine of the contestants, one is a plant, with undercover reporter Laura, coerced by her editor into joining the show to find out the inside gossip.
But she is soon out of her depth and at the mercy of a ruthless producer, a woman willing to do anything to increase viewer numbers.
As Laura soon finds out, all the contestants have their secret that they would like kept buried, but as the pressure mounts, the emotions start to pour out and everything reaches boiling point quite quickly.
An easy-to-read book, this is Kelly’s debut thriller, but one which has drawn on her experiences of years working as a reporter for national newspapers, as well as for television shows, mostly notably Endemol, the creators of the original reality show, Big Brother.
It’s full of emotion, passion and twists and turns, which are guaranteed to keep the pages turning as you top up your tan on the beach, this summer.
