The British Beach Guide

Godrevy Lighthouse, St Ives Bay

Man on the beach Ian Brighouse is passionate about the sands of the UK.

So much so, that he has travelled around the nation to discover the best and find out the opinions of the people who love them as much as he does.

With visits to the remote wildness of Cullykhan in Aberdeenshire, to the bustling working harbour of St Ives in Cornwall, Ian has visited them all.

Notoriously people are happier and more relaxed on beaches, but why? Ian probes and discovers the answers from a range of different people.

Being on a beach, Ian found people were receptive to his questions and answered with real honesty and passion.

The result is The British Beach Guide, published by Whittles and priced at £18.99. With 100 colour photos and 18 maps, the book also gives a summary of his impressions of the beach, alongside the thoughts and photos of those interviewed.

Ian discovered that beaches inspire creativity and connections with nature and can be a place of reflection, work or activities, but most of all, the sands have an uplifting effect.

With an impressive 130 beaches to choose from, Ian celebrates our love for the beach, a unique place where land, sky and sea meet.

Many people have come to love a particular beach through family holidays, a place of solitude to think and ponder and also space to make those all-important life decisions.

Surrounded by beauty, the beach seems to inspire and relax people and the overwhelming message of Ian’s beautiful book is one of positivity and a chance be either alone or celebrate with others a natural wonder.

For many the beach signifies fun, freedom and a chance to relax and recharge and Ian’s thoughtful and gentle probing, has resulted in a book which is both informative as well as insightful as to something we all take for granted.

Enjoy the journey from the vast empty sands of North Norfolk to Anthony Gormley’s iron men at Crosby beach on Merseyside and you might even hear the sea calling.
