Premium Tequila Boom Continues In The UK

The popularity and consumption of quality tequila continues to rise in the UK as more people are discovering the versatility of Mexico’s national spirit in mixed drinks. As a result, supermarkets here in the UK are expanding the range they sell with the world’s first premium tequila, 1800® Tequila, announcing they will be listed in both Tesco and Waitrose from this month.

I understand that over 600 stores across the two retailers are or will be stocking 1800® Tequila Silver which is priced at £30 for a 70cl bottle at 40% ABV.

1800 Silver is made from 100% Weber blue agave which is grown on highlands ranches and bottled in Jalisco, Mexico. The liquid is double distilled, and a special selection of white tequila is blended together to add complexity and character to the drink. The clean, balanced taste has hints of sweet fruit and pepper, which makes it ideal for mixing in cocktails.

Oli Pergl, Tequila Educator at Proximo Spirits, said: “From refreshingly simple tequila and tonics to adding a twist on classic cocktails, 1800 Silver is really capturing the attention of drinkers here in the UK. With quality, premium tequilas in general being much more widely available, and easy to work with when making cocktails at home, we are sure this trend will continue to grow for a good while yet.”

Cocktail preparation

Recent results from the IWSR, which conducts drinks market research and analysis, show that Super Premium tequila grew at +12% and Ultra Premium +13% in the UK between 2018 and 2019. In fact Waitrose reported in May this year that their sales of the drink boomed by 175% since the lockdown in March, with virtual Mexican nights and cocktail hours driving demand for tequila in cocktails.

Many drinkers are familiar with a sweet and sharp Margarita, but the quality and smooth balance of 1800®’s fruity, peppery notes opens them up to a whole new world of cocktail creativity and long drinks that are really easy to prepare at home.

In fact recent research has shown that tequila is now being consumed in much more considered ways, such as the very straightforward 1800® Tequila and tonic, which is a deliciously refreshing combination of 1800® Silver and premium tonic water served over ice and garnished with a slice of grapefruit. This offers a nice alternative for our nation of seasoned G&T fans!

Drinks such as the Old Fashioned or Espresso Martini also work extremely well with 1800® Tequila and these new partnerships with Tesco and Waitrose, mean that you can discover for yourself that tequila is perfect for creating cocktails at home and adding a twist onto classic cocktails that would typically add alternative spirits.
