Maradiva Villas Resort and Spa is a luxury all-villa resort on the southwest coast of Mauritius. It features a private beach looking onto Tamarin Bay and the steep slopes of La Morne Brabant, the mountain that is the heart of one of the nation’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The beachfront resort is spread across 27 acres, providing each of its 65 villas room for spacious outdoor terraces and private pools that are ideal for cooling off, plus romantic moments with that special someone. The plunge pools range in size from 15 to 56 square metres.
From each of the villas it is a short walk down to the golden sand of the private, palm-fringed beach. Early morning walks along the beach are ideal for watching birds flitting between the foliage. Later in the day bathers take their place under shades to read, relax and soak up the sunshine down on the beach.
A family of dolphins frequently visits Tamarin Bay and excursions are offered to view the marine mammals. The bay opens into the Indian Ocean and its pleasantly warm water is lovely to swim in. Alternatively, it’s possible to take a dip in the Maradiva’s heated infinity pool.
A range of complimentary activities is offered at the resort, including kayaking, snorkelling and stand-up paddle boarding. It’s also possible to arrange a round of golf, scuba diving and a visit to Casela Nature Park, a 15-minute drive away, where breakfast with giraffes is an option.
The villas at this resort are inspired by the design of colonial-era bungalows. They are laid out to offer privacy and space to unwind. Their comfortably furnished terraces are ideal for spending time reading and reflecting, and private outdoor dining is an option. The villas make a positive impression even before opening the door leading into the bedroom.
With wooden flooring and Hermès wallpaper, the air-conditioned rooms are elegantly furnished and quiet. They feature a desk, for taking care of business should that be necessary while in Mauritius, have Wi-Fi access and there’s a television next to the coffeemaker.
The villas have walk-in wardrobes, bathrooms featuring roomy bathtubs that are ideal for soaking in after a day on the beach plus indoor and outdoor showers.
Either will do after a workout in the Maradiva’s 24-hour fitness centre. Along with Swiss balls, free weights, workstations and cardio equipment count among the kit available in the air-conditioned training room. Between 8:00am and 8:00pm instructors lead fitness classes, including aqua gym, meditation and yoga sessions. Personal trainers are available too.
The resort’s wellness offering also encompasses an Ayurvedic spa with treatment rooms, including two for couples. With a hot tub, steam room and sauna, it offers a tranquil area for relaxation.
Onsite, the Maradiva has a stylish Indian restaurant, Cilantro, and a teppanyaki option, Teppan, whose sittings are at 7:00pm and 9:00pm. Mediterranean and Mauritian dishes count among the offerings in the resort’s Coast2Coast restaurant, where breakfast is also served. It’s also possible to dine in the restaurants of the neighbouring Sands Suite Resort and Spa, which is under the same ownership.
For special occasions, candlelit dinner can be served on the jetty or under Raj-style tents on the beach. Guests can learn how to open Champagne with a sword to make those dinners stand out.
Along with drinks, light meals are served in the resort’s Breakers Bar. The poolside bar is a lovely spot for drinks as the sun goes down. This part of Mauritius is renowned for its vibrant sunsets. Viewing the sun sink towards the sea while sipping a chilled, pre-dinner drink is part of the Maradiva experience.
The resort’s boutique offers beachwear, sun cream and much more. Artworks from the Maradiva’s gallery and Carl F. Bucherer watches may tempt guests.
This is a resort that has hosted Hollywood A-listers and numerous honeymoons. Staying at Maradiva Villas Resort and Spa is a way of experiencing Mauritius in style.
