Crazy Pizza Marylebone

When it comes to pizza, London has more than its fair share of pizza restaurants to choose from. They can range from the mediocre to the pretty darn good. However, if you are looking for a really good quality upmarket pizza restaurant, then may I suggest Crazy Pizza, which has two restaurants in London. One in Knightsbridge and the second one, which I had lunch at recently, in Marylebone, which was their first London restaurant.

Located in a quiet side street in Marylebone a stone’s through from Baker Street, the front of the restaurant immediately has that upmarket look. Step through the door and you know you are inside a quality restaurant, as we were immediately greeted by our hostess who offered to take our coats and show us to our comfortable table by the window looking out across the restaurant.

The Crazy Pizza décor follows a similar and familiar theme that can be seen throughout their restaurants around the world, with pictures and memorabilia dotted on and around the walls. My lunch companion commenting that the interior is very similar to the Crazy Pizza he had been to in Monte Carlo just the previous month. This will no doubt be reassuring to many regular Crazy Pizza fans.

In the evenings the restaurant has a resident DJ playing classic Italian music to add to the atmosphere while you sip a cocktail or enjoy your dinner. And speaking of cocktails, they have a great cocktail menu featuring their very own “Crazy Signature” cocktails, such as the Dolce & Banana, made with Martini Rosso, hibiscus cordial, orange juice and banana liquor or the Flor De Jamaica, which is a mix of Bombay Sapphire, Pimento Dram, hibiscus flower orange oil. Ginger, honey and allspice berries.

As well serving delicious pizzas, you can also choose from a selection of crunchy, freshly prepared healthy salads, such as a Caesar, Niçoise, Asparagus, Spinach, Quinoa or Crab salad. The excellent starter selection includes things like Smoked Salmon on Toast, Besola, Fried Squid and Zucchini and Beef Carpaccio.

We started with a refreshing glass of Prosecco from Veneto that went down extremely well with a large plate of thinly sliced Joselito Iberico ham (Pata Negra) and bowl of deliciously creamy Burrata with Datterino tomatoes drizzled with basil and extra virgin olive oil.

So, what are the pizzas like? Well, I can tell you that they come with thin crusts, made from yeast-free dough, which still manages to retain that great pizza taste, and can be made with pretty much any topping of your choice and as crazy and extravagant as want to make it! For example, you could choose the Pata Negra, the Crazy Pizza Focaccia or Tartufo with black truffle shavings and extra virgin olive oil.

In fact, I counted 22 different types of pizza on the menu, including one of my favourites, the Calzone, but we shared two different pizzas, the first being the Burrata with lashings of tomato sauce, plenty of creamy Burrata and topped with basil. The other was the Regina, with tomato sauce, Buffalo mozzarella, cooked ham and mushrooms. As you can see from the photographs, these are large pizzas, but that thin crust means you don’t feel overly full and so I’m embarrassed to say that we actually managed to finish both pizzas!

The predominantly Italian wine list, with a few labels from France and one from New Zealand, is comprehensive, with a nice selection of wines available by the glass and a wider selection by the bottle. We enjoyed a Merlot, also from Veneto, which paired superbly with our pizzas.

Tempting as the desserts sounded, we were well and truly full. But on another occasion, we would ordinarily finish off with a creamy rich dessert such as the naughty but nice Tiramisù or their Crazy Cake, washed down with an espresso. On this particular visit though we simply rounded off our superb lunch with an espresso and Americana and bid the delightful staff adieu as we went on our merry way off into central London, agreeing we would be back again soon to try some different toppings.

You can also enjoy a Crazy Pizza in the comfort of your own home, as they offer a takeout and delivery menu. And every Saturday they serve their “Crazy Bubbles” Brunch between midday and 3:00pm, where for three hours you can go crazy with their generous selection of bespoke and bottomless cocktails and champagne to go with their thin crust pizzas and even some pizza spinning by the chefs!

As well as the two restaurants in London, Crazy Pizza currently has restaurants in Monte Carlo, Porto Cervo in Sardinia, Riyadh, Rome and Milan, with plans to open A new restaurant in Doha.
