Ocean line Celebrity Cruises has revealed that it will be entering the river cruise market in 2027.
The line, which is part of the Royal Caribbean Group, is launching Celebrity River Cruises with 10 new ships. While full details of the itineraries have not yet been announced, Celebrity says the vessels will sail on the world’s “most iconic rivers”, beginning with cruises in Europe.
It is highly likely this will include the Rhine and Danube – the most popular waterways for river cruises – and bookings will open later this year.
The parent company says the move reflects growing demand for river cruises, and Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty said half of the company’s customers have either taken a river cruise or are interested in trying one.
Celebrity is known for its contemporary Edge-class cruise ships, which combine striking modern design with high service levels and the company says it intends to bring the same benchmarks to its river fleet.
Mr Liberty continued:
“We’re thrilled to announce our entry into the river cruise market through our Celebrity Cruises premium travel brand. Our guests and travel partners should expect us to do what we do best; innovate and elevate the river cruise experience as we meet the growing demand for intimate, culturally enriching travel experiences.”
While further details of the ships will be announced over the coming months, Celebrity says they will provide 360 degree views, sail through the heart of culturally and historically significant cities and offer locally inspired cuisine and unique shore experiences.
