Adding a huge dollop of horror to a hen night is the perfect ingredients for a hilarious piece of theatre.
Laughter was rolling down the cheeks of the audience at The Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow as Hen Night Horror took a spooky turn.
Perfect for Halloween and anyone tying the knot, the comedy by Fraser Boyle and Ali Clelland first premiered in 2024 and is back with a bump and a dynamic new cast.
The simple story centres on Amanda’s (Jennifer Neil) hen weekend in a remote Highland retreat where she is joined by her two bridesmaids, Donna (Hannah Howie) and Lydia (Dani Heron), who have fallen out with each other.
The atmosphere is tense as Lydia deals with a broken nose and a bad case of cystitis and Donna appears to be keeping a secret from her life-long friends. Amanda just wants everything to be perfect and film plenty of content for her socials.
But the night turns upside down when Donna’s new dodgy career comes to light and one of her clients, Mr Jefferies (Alan Orr) turns up for some attention.
And then there’s the small matter of the mysterious PC Walters (Matthew McKenna) who has a funny accent and is very erratic.
What follows is like a pantomime, with lots of twists and turns and it’s tension all the way with an underlying layer of pure old-fashioned humour.
There’s plenty of banter and singing and the three girls work well together, keeping the fast paced show zip along with plenty of fun.
Much credit must go to the writers. Fraser Boyle, who co-wrote the show, is a rising name in Scottish theatre and recently won the inaugural CATS award for Outstanding Pantomime for Mother Goose. He also wrote Aladdie, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty for the Ayr Gaiety Theatre.
And Ali Cleland’s credits include We Come to Break Your Hearts at the Tron Theatre, Legally Blonde at Aberystwyth Arts Centre and Jamie & The Unicorn.
Hen Night Horror runs at The Pavilion until 31st October 2026, with performances at 3:00pm and 7:30pm. For ticket availability, please visit: www.trafalgartickets.com.
