Live theatre is back in Blackpool and taking the seaside town by storm is the fun and lively musical Hairspray.
And there is still chance to watch this upbeat and colourful production, with the show set to roll until January 2nd at the Winter Gardens.
The show has an all-round talented cast including Cold Feet favourite John Thomson as Wilbur Turnblad and it’s a great tonic over the festive season.
The story is set in Baltimore in 1962, where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is determined to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national television.
Her audition makes her a local star, but she is determined to fight for equality and ensure people of all races are allowed to aim for the stars.
Tracy is also keen to find love and she soon has heart-throb Link Larkin eating out of her hand. The show is based on the 1988 film and is a feel good factor production, full of colour, fun and some fantastic dancing and singing.
In his first ever musical theatre stage role, John Thomson shows he hasn’t lost any of his thirst for fame and despite only having joined the cast on December 13th, he gives a polished performance.
John is joined by musician, actress and TV presenter Brenda Edwards of The X Factor and Loose Women fame and West End leading man Alex Bourne, stars as Tracy’s mum Edna Turnblad. Both are slick and professional.
Katie Brace makes her first professional stage debut as Tracy Turnblad and she is a natural, with a strong singing voice and clearly enjoying her newfound fame.
The show was due to tour in 2020, but was held up due to the pandemic, so there is a lot of pent up fun ready to pop from both the cast and audience, with the North of England crowd not hanging back in their appreciation of the show.
With Paul Kerryson directing and choreography by Olivier Award winning Drew McOnie and set design by Takis, the show is a real hit and a great way to get out of the house over Christmas.
