Back in January I wrote about the launch of the new Hawker Hunter Atlas Dual Time Chronograph, a timepiece very much in keeping with the spirit of pioneering aircraft of the jet-age, which pays tribute to what is arguably the most celebrated and utilised fighter jet in military aviation history, the Hawker Hunter, of which 1,972 were built by Hawker Siddeley, powered by a Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engine.
The jet’s maiden flight was on 20th July 1951, and renowned British fighter ace and test pilot Neville Duke famously broke the world air speed record in 1953 when he flew a Hawker Hunter at 727.63 mph (1,171.01 km/h).
The “Black Arrows”, the RAF’s display unit, also set a record that still stands today by looping and barrel rolling 22 Hawker Hunters in formation at the Society of British Aircraft Constructors’ show at Farnborough in 1958.
As we approach the end of the year and Christmas is just around the corner, AVI-8 have added some new colourways to the collection which capture the essence of the historic Hawker Hunter fighter jet.
The Japanese chronograph movement is encased in a robust 44mm 12-sided stainless steel case inspired by the Hunter’s flight instruments, along with a anti reflection coated mineral lens, and is water resistant to 50 metres.
The 12-hour scale bezel gives easy display of a third time zone, perfect for those of you who travel a lot. The watch is also fitted with date, dual time and 24-hour read-out functionalities, while the multi-layered dial is reminiscent of the Hunter’s cockpit instrumentation, giving clear readability with Swiss lume applied baton indexes.
The new colours include Shadow Grey, Crimson Red and Raven Black that come fitted with a 22mm wide solid stainless steel bracelet with fold over buckle. While the Jade Black, Jet Black and Charcoal Grey timepieces have a 22mm premium handcrafted genuine leather strap, exuding military aviation inspiration with contrast stitching.
