Meandering On The Slow Train Through Spain

You can almost feel the warm rays of sunshine which rail enthusiast and writer Tom Chesshyre enjoyed on his journey around Spain.

Such is the joy in which Tom writes about a subject he obviously not only loves but is knowledgeable about too.

Published by Summersdale, Slow Travel Around Spain covers 3,000 miles around the country on 52 train rides, which are spread between soaring mountains, across arid deserts and down glittering coastlines.

Tom’ s aim is to show the armchair traveller the real Spain, although he does take a quick stop at Benidorm and Torremolinos too!

Hopping aboard and heading wherever the trains take him in a big S-shape around the country, Tom also meets lots of interesting people along the way.

His journey takes him from hidden spots in Catalonia, through the plains of Aragon and across the north coast to Santiago de Compostela, then via Madrid, to the wilds of Extremadura, dusty mining towns, the cathedrals and palaces of Valencia and Granada and finally to Andalusia’s beguiling and hot capital, Seville.

The book is so simple to read, it’s easy on the eye, holds your attention well and is full of fun and mischief, really bringing this country to life.

It’s obvious that Tom is in no rush to travel around and instead concentrates on going as slowly as he can, as he drinks in the beauty of the country and its differing regions. Like all good adventures, Tom has plenty of mishaps on the way and they are incorporated beautifully in the book, resulting in a fantastically interesting and exciting read.

Tom is no stranger to train travel and has written 10 books dedicated to 40,000 miles aboard and across the world.

And with more and more people opting to swop the sky for the rails, travelling by train has become a more popular and sustainable way of travelling.

Spain is the number one country for people to visit from the UK, with 18 million of us heading there every year to enjoy its charms.

So, jump aboard and follow the right track to some seriously good travelling!
