No sign of post festive blues when you have the energy busting The Bodyguard Musical to get you moving!
Glasgow’s Theatre Royal was packed to the rafters in anticipation of a spectacular opening performance of the show which is based on the hit 1992 Warner Bros film and book by Alexander Dinelaris.
With a great storyline promising love and danger mixed with Whitney Houston’s lively hit songs, dazzling scenery and glitzy costumes, the musical which runs until Sunday, is a real showstopper.
Gun shots fired in the opening scene sparked the audience into alert watch mode ready for the story which sees singer Rachel Marron (Emily Williams) juggling stardom with motherhood and the attention of a crazed stalker, while her management team concentrate on Rachel winning awards.
To protect their star, Frank Farmer (Ayden Callaghan) a bodyguard is brought in to look after her and her young son Fletcher (the fantastic Kaylen Luke) and Rachel’s sister Nicki Marron (Emily-Mae Walker). But things turn complicated as Frank fights his own demons and is the centre of affections for both Rachel and Nicki.
Williams has a strong acting and singing presence and is well tuned with the musical, after playing the main role in the 2017 Australian production. Joined by former Hollyoakes and Emmerdale actor, Callaghan, the duo spark off each other for a polished performance of the show which is on its last leg of a nationwide tour.
Marios Nicolaides plays a convincing sinister stalker and the management team of Sy Spector (James Groom), Bill Devaney (John Macaulay), Tony Scibelli (Graham Elwell) and Jack Hardwick as Ray Court, help the dangerous love story flow.
The pull of the show is definitely the songs, with classics including Queen of the Night, So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love, Run to You, I Have Nothing, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and I Will Always Love You, going down fantastically well with the audience.
The ensemble made up of Alexandros Beshonges, Kayne Gordon, Jack Hardwick, James-Lee Harris, Kalisha Johnson, Samantha Mbolekwa, Liam Morris, Abbie Quinnen, Charlotte Scally, Yiota Theo and Marco Venturini, provide high impact dance routines and along with an edgy story, powerful songs and a finale delivering fire cannons and confetti, helped bring 2024 in with spectacular style!
The Bodyguard: The Musical runs until 7th January 2024 at Theatre Royal, Glasgow, with a matinee on Saturday. Ticket information is available from www.atgtickets.com.
