There is something about people watching which is good for the soul. And having a bird’s eye view of Scotland’s capital city at the same time is even more therapeutic!

Edinburgh is known for its elegance and grandeur and no more so than In the UESCO recognised New Town and George Street, which is a stone’s throw away from the main thoroughfare of Princes Street. Originally designed to be a haven away from overcrowding and poverty, it later became a hub for banking and attracted beautiful buildings.

Here, one of the historic old properties has been transformed into 25 luxurious serviced apartments, ranging from cosy studios to a sublime penthouse which affords views as far as the Firth of Forth and across towards the Queensferry Crossing.

And the best comes via the huge original windows from the street facing Edwardian suite at RÌGH Residences, which provide a chance to watch everyone going about their daily business and at night, enjoy picturesque views of the castle when it is bathed in rich techno colours.

Everything is made easy with hi tech technology for the entrance buttons, to the checking in and each apartment has tablets ready to use for any requests, with the room key lighting up if the room needs to be cleaned or for a “Do Not Disturb” mode.

Stepping into the beautifully tiled entrance, it is the start of a fabulous experience. The reception is manned in case of technical problems and there is a small but impressive lounge where daily pastries are left on a first come, first served basis, as well as a coffee and tea machine.

A shiny gold elevator can whisk guests up to the apartments and for those who prefer the stairs, the walls are adorned with sleek modern art.

The Edwardian Suite was a delight. With a huge bedroom tastefully decorated with luxury wallpaper and furnishings. One of the nice touches was the old-fashioned bed-side radio and the remote controlled blinds and curtains.

A good night’s sleep is guaranteed in the big comfy beds and there is plenty of storage space and all the usual extras, such as hairdryer and full length mirror. The sleek bathroom has a powerful shower and sweet smelling toiletries from Laura Thomas of North Berwick.

The hallway and main lounge have arty black and white photographs of the city and its historic architecture and with the original fireplace and a comfy settee and dining area to enjoy, it’s a home from home.

The kitchen area has the luxuries of a dish washer, fancy drinks machine which makes hot and cold and a choice of breakfast or green tea and whisky coffee to enjoy, along with a packed fridge with mini bottles of milk and Scottish favourite, Irun Bru.

For ultimate luxury, a special take on continental breakfasts is available from the nearby Côte Restaurant in Frederick Street.

All the apartments on the first to the fourth floors include original fixtures and fittings, the fifth has a modernist feel, with a custom-built set of penthouses, complete with specialist glass to allow for the views which stretch across the city and to Leith and surrounding areas.

The state of the art technology also provides climate control and Sky television, and pet-friendly apartments are available in the building, owned by RÌGH Properties, who also have a collection of self-caters across the city.

And what a city, Edinburgh is. Packed full of history, culture and fine dining, nearly every weekend there is a different event on, from The Fringe, a festival of arts in August to a winter festival of live music.

With all the major high street shops and a wealth of trendy pubs and nightlife too, there is plenty to do, once the people watching is over!
